A boat trailer really is something that a boat owner can’t go wrong by purchasing, since it serves two purposes at once: It is a very convenient way to store your boat when you are not using it, and more importantly it allow you to be mobile with your boat, taking it anywhere you care to go boating. A good trailer must be able to perform both functions effectively.

Many people who are purchasing a boat, especially first-time buyers, are much more concerned with the boat than they are with the trailer. They will spend a lot of money on an awesome boat, then tack on the cheapest trailer they can find almost as an afterthought. If you want to have the best experience possible with your boating adventures, you should follow these tips about your boat trailer.

1. Don’t overload your trailer. The carrying capacity of you trailer should be a comfortable margin higher than the weight of the boat, fully loaded with gear and motor. Don’t pick a trailer with capacity exactly that of your boat’s weight.

2. Go for tires and wheels with larger diameters whenever possible. Larger wheel rotate slower than smaller ones, saving wear on the bearings and tires through heat buildup and friction.

3. Any boat trailer you purchase should be capable of being driven on. By this, we mean that you should be able to back the trailer into the water and simply drive your boat up onto it. the winch should only be needed for the last few inches.

4. In the same vein, make sure that the lights on the trailer are waterproofed so they are not damaged by immersion in water.

5. Match the trailer to your application. If you are going to be launching in salt water, for instance, there are specific trailers for that. they usually have a coating that resists the corrosive effects of salt water. Other trailers exist for most situations you will be launching into and recovering your boat from.

6. Make sure that your trailer carries at least one spare. There is nothing worse than blowing the tire on your trailer a hundred miles from nowhere and not having a spare. Having to leave your boat and trailer behind can be a risky proposition.

You should consider your boat trailer to be just as much an investment as your boat. A faulty trailer can cause the total destruction of your boat and cause dangerous accidents. Likewise, launching and recovering your boat will be much easier if you have a properly designed trailer.
